NiCole Keith is a professor that walks her talk…literally. As an associate professor in the School of Physical Education & Tourism Management, she is passionate about getting people moving and exercising for better health. She even walks her talk by keeping a Trek Desk in her office … a desk that fits over a treadmill machine.
Keith is also passionate about reaching out to the community with her expertise. She is a founder of the acclaimed PARCS program, Physically Active Residential Communities and Schools (formerly Fit for Life). This collaboration between Indianapolis Public Schools and the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management provides a fitness center manned by physical education students and supervised by IUPUI faculty at three area high schools. The fitness center services are available to IPS students, parents, teachers, and community members during after school and evening hours. Since its inception in 2005 it has impacted the health of over 10,000 clients
Her outreach is global as well. As a part of the IUPUI-Moi University (Kenya) partnership, Keith helped to negotiate arrangements for IUPUI and Moi University students to participate in marketing and management efforts for Lornah Kiplagat's High Altitude Training Center in Iten, Kenya. Kiplagat holds world records in 5k, 10 mile, and 20k road running. Keith has served as a lead investigator on numerous grant-based research studies at IUPUI. She has won numerous awards and honors, including election as a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine in 2007; Sue Barrett Research Awards (2004, 2006) and Walt Lienert Teaching Award (2003) from the IUPUI Department of Physical Education; and Favorite Professor Awards from the IUPUI Department of Athletics (2003, 2004, 2005).
